Professionals need to periodically meet to review whether existing bridge types continue to meet the needs of the Public, or whether a modified version is needed or whether a sizable need for a new bridge type has emerged. Although the NTBF does not have the means to modify existing designs nor to develop new bridges, it does have the mandate to inform the GoN of such needs as well as other major stakeholders (i.e. bi-lateral donors, International Financial Institutions, research centers, etc). It has become quite apparent for example, that there is a vacuum in the area of appropriate “rural bridges”. Current designs are meant for paved roads, are thus very expensive and the lack of appropriate designs for dirt roads has resulted in crops rotting away along the roadside during the monsoon. Millions of rupees are wasted each year this way.
